BLESSED ELIZABETH'S OWN PRAYERS

PRAYER TO THE TRINITY

O my God, O Trinity whom I adore, help me to become completely forgetful of myself, that I may make my home in You forever, changeless and calm, as though my soul were already in eternity. May nothing disturb my peace or cause me to leave You, O my Unchanging Lord, but may I be carried off, each moment, further and further into the depths of Your Mystery.

Establish my soul in peace, make it Your heaven, Your cherished home, the place where You rest. May I never leave You there alone. Keep me there, all of me, wholly vigilant in living faith, adoring You with all my being, and wholly yielded up to Your creative action.

O my Christ, beloved Christ, driven by Love - even to the Cross, gladly would I be a spouse of Your Heart; gladly would I live for the resounding praise of Your Glory; gladly would I love you ...... until I die of love! Yet I feel so helpless. I beg You: 'clothe me with yourself', make my soul one with every movement of Your own, immerse me in Yourself, invade me, substitute Yourself for me, so that my life may be but a radiance of your own. Come within me - adoring, healing, saving.

O Eternal Word, Utterance of my God, I want to spend my life listening to You. I want to become utterly docile, that I may learn everything from you. Then, through all the 'nights', when I feel empty and helpless, I will gaze upon You always, You alone, and remain in Your resplendent light. O my beloved Star, so fascinate me that I may no longer be able to stray from Your light.

O consuming Fire, Spirit of Love, 'come upon me', so that the Word may take flesh again, as it were, in my soul: may I be for Him a humanity, an extension of his own, where He can live once more all His Mystery.

And You, O Father, bend lovingly over Your frail and weak creature. 'Cover me with Your Glory-cloud.' Behold in me only Your 'Beloved Son in whom You have placed all Your delight'.

O my Three, my All, my Beatitude, infinite Solitude, Immensity wherein I lose myself, I yield myself entirely to You. Take me captive, so that I, in turn, may bury myself in You, awaiting the hour when I can depart, to contemplate, in Your light, the limitless Mystery of Your Glory.

This translation of Sr Elizabeth's prayer has been made by Fr James McCaffrey, Prior of the Carmelite Priory, Oxford, England. It was originally published in the Mount Carmel magazine. Permission to reproduce it on this site, is acknowledged with deep gratitude by the site owner.

PRAYER TO THE TRINITY
Adapted for singing

Trinity whom I adore, calm and changeless mystery!
I hide within Your life, "You in me, and I in You."
Make my soul Your dwelling place, Your heav'n on earth, Your home of rest,
May I never leave You alone. But keep me there in living faith.

Word of God, eternal Sound, I give all to learn from You,
Through darkest poverty I will cling to Your embrace.
Praise of Glory I shall be. Oh, Star of mine with lustrous beams.
Fascinate me with Your light, And hold me fast within "my Three".

Dove of Love, consuming Fire, form in me His mystery,
For Him, the Word of God, I will be humanity.
Father mine, look down on me, and see in me Your only Son.
Oh, my Life, my joy, my All; You are "my Three" my Trinity..

PRAYER TO ST. ELIZABETH OF HUNGARY

Remember, O Saint Elizabeth, my patroness and my heavenly guardian, that I am thy little charge; help me in this desert land, and uphold me in my weakness. Give me thy virtues, thy gentle humility, thy sublime charity. Ask God to change my faults into virtues as He changed the bread thou heldest into roses. Grant me the wings of hope that I may mount to heaven, and receive me thyself at the gate of Paradise when God calls me to Him. Amen.

Elizabeth composed this 'memorare' to her holy patroness, when aged 13. It is given in PG9 and S10.

A HYMN TO LOVE

I love to think that it is for Him that I have left everything; it is so good to give when one loves, and I love this God so much who is jealous to have me all for Himself! I feel so much love in my soul! He is in me and I am in Him. I have only to love Him, to let myself be loved, all of the time: to wake in Love, to move in Love, to sleep in Love, my soul in His Soul, my heart in His Heart, so that through contact with Him, He purifies me, and delivers me from my misery. If only you knew how this engulfs me!

Elizabeth wrote this gem in a letter to Canon Angles [L177] in 1903. It originally appeared in S138 (PG117) and was translated afresh in Update 2.

FORGIVE ME

Dear Master, if I am to fall again as deeply, rather let me die! How canst Thou bear the sight of me after such offences? Why hast Thou been so good with me by granting me so many graces? I thank Thee ...... Forgive me! How I grieve on remembering what pain I have given Thee, Whom I love so dearly, and whom Thou hast chosen for Thy bride! Forgive, Jesus, forgive me, unworthy as I am! No one else would have shown such ingratitude hadst Thou bestowed on her such gifts. I love Thee and weep for the sins that have wounded Thee so deeply. Pity me, forgetting all but Thine own great mercy!!

This prayer was written during the great mission of 1899. It is given in [PG34, S40]. There are many similar prayers in Chapter III of The "Praise of Glory".
